What Fiber Actually Does in the Body
Fiber does not provide meaningful calories because humans lack the enzymes to break it down in the small intestine. But its journey through the gut is far from passive. Soluble fiber — found in oats, barley, apples, and legumes — dissolves in water and slows the absorption of glucose, which supports more stable blood sugar levels. Juicing removes the fibrous pulp from produce, so whole fruit is generally a better fiber source than fruit juice regardless of how fresh or minimally processed that juice is.
How to Increase Fiber Intake Without Discomfort
